2004 Expansion - Initial Upgrades
The first major phase of development took place in 2004, during which a brand new terminal building was constructed along with several other facilities were upgraded to support growing demand for domestic and regional flights. This laid the foundation for Gan to evolve into a more prominent player in the Maldivian aviation sector.

2008 - AIA Pvt Ltd Takes Over Operations
A pivotal moment in the airport’s history occurred in 2008 when the Government of Maldives granted AIA Pvt Ltd a 50-year concession agreement to operate and manage Gan International Airport. This marked the beginning of a more commercially-focused management approach, which allowed for the injection of private sector investment and expertise into the airport’s development.
Under this agreement, AIA Pvt Ltd was tasked with improving and expanding airport facilities, increasing capacity, and modernizing operations. This arrangement has allowed for a more streamlined, efficient, and customer-oriented airport experience.

2016 - Second Phase of Expansion
In 2016, the airport underwent another major phase of expansion, which included the extension of the runway by 950m and resurfacing of the existing runway with a total length of 3500m to accommodate larger aircraft, improving other airside infrastructure such as resurfacing of majority area of the existing apron. This development ensured that Gan could cater to increasing passenger traffic and the growing demand for international air travel to the Maldives.

2023–2025 - Third Major Development Phase
In 2023, the latest phase of development began, aiming to further elevate Gan International Airport to meet international standards for large-scale international airports. The third-phase expansion, set to be completed by March 2025, will introduce several key upgrades:
- Terminal Expansion: The existing terminal will be expanded from both sides to increase capacity, with enhanced passenger services and amenities, such as additional check-in counters, baggage handling areas, and more retail and dining options.
- Upgradation of Road networks: As part of the ongoing development of Gan International Airport, significant improvements are being made to the road infrastructure of the airport. The existing road network, originally constructed by the RAF, will undergo a comprehensive upgrade to the highest standards. This enhancement is aimed at providing a smoother, more efficient, and comfortable driving experience for airport users, including passengers, staff, and freight transport.
- Support Infrastructure Developments: The ongoing development project also consists construction of a brand-new ATC Tower along with ARFF building to support airport’s air navigation services and emergency responses respectively. It also includes construction of a desalination plant to support new developments and upgradation of the passenger jetty for passenger comfort. These projects are critical to ensuring the airport meets international standards while accommodating future growth in traffic and services.
- Advanced Technology and Passenger Experience: Cutting-edge technology such as automated check-in kiosks, and automated in-line baggage handling system will be introduced to improve operational efficiency and passenger experience.
- Sustainability Features: The development will prioritize eco-friendly practices, including energy-efficient systems, provisions for solar power integration, and water conservation measures.
